For most people in the UK, the idea of driving on ice fills them with dread. The prospect of driving on a frozen lake simply scales up that paranoia with the added terror of drowning through a hole in the ice, to a cold watery grave.
What’s not to like?
In fact, driving on a race track created entirely from the surface of a frozen lake is one of life’s greatest pleasures if you enjoy perfecting the skill of driving.
As for the prospect of the ice failing, at 50cm thick, it will support a small truck.
This was shot when working in Scandinavia on the first year that Ice Driver was in operation. Waiting for McKenna to come back into view, I turned around and shot this looking directly into the sun. In some ways, this shot breaks many of the conventional photography rules. The rule of thirds, shooting directly into the sun. You know the drill.
Personally, I feel that including the sun on photographs adds life to the shot and it’s something I use very often. Call it the rebel in me if you like.
My trusty Canon 1DS Mk1 was cutting edge at the time. Today, the Sony Alpha I use has even greater exposure ability in a tiny, compact package.
