How to Write Your Bio Page

I always struggled to write a biography page for my website. Mine has had multiple incarnations over the years and in truth, until recently, it wasn’t something I paid a great deal of attention to. With more and more new business arriving via my website and social media channels, I knew I needed something short and concise but that ticked all of the boxes. But what to say?

I’d tried long bios, but they became too boring and looked like one of my old job applications from years ago. I tried a deep thinking, arty bio, but that’s not really me. My creativity doesn’t come from navel gazing and while I’m proud of my photography and writing, I try not to analyze what I do too much, preferring to go with the flow. Those of a more tortured soul may want to try this excellent website for creating an arty statement.

I tried a humorous one, but that’s almost as dangerous as writing a political or religious one. Not everyone shares your views. The whole process wasn’t helped by my diverse skill set. Like many freelance people working today, I need to be multi-skilled. At any one time in a busy month, I could be shooting photography for a car manufacturer, motorsport team or magazine. Shooting aerial photography or architecture. Writing blog posts or in depth features. Designing websites. Delivering driver coaching or track instruction on a circuit. It’s a skill set that’s developed over time and serves me well. But writing a short bio page that covered all of those things and gave a flavour of what I might be like to work with? That was killing me…

So, am I photographing it, writing about it, driving it or instructing in it? It’s a diverse life….

But a recent article by the guys at Wonderful Machine gave me more inspiration, so I finally managed to write something that wasn’t too long, wasn’t pretentious and covered all of the things I do, all the while perhaps giving just the smallest idea of me as a person. Next thing I need to do is get a new portrait or avatar shot done. The existing one’s been around for too long now. But that’s another story
